Founded in 2006, the Uttarakhand Mandal of America (UMA) is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization built to nurture a strong network for the Uttarakhandi community in the United States. Headquartered in the San Francisco Bay Area, California, UMA serves as a cultural bridge for the diaspora while funding critical charitable projects, educational scholarships, and socio-economic development initiatives back home in Uttarakhand.

In the late 1990s, an informal social network group was formed in San Francisco, California, by families living in the area with some connection to the hill region of Uttar Pradesh, India.
